When you drive your car in the day time and you rush across a bridge, you will experience the bridge as a spot, because the surroundings change for a moment; the land is replaced by moving water. It is this transition that, together with 'the lighting of water' transforms the experience. They create space on a bridge. When darkness falls this experience will vanish, day light is replaced by ‘artificial lighting' which will lighten up the surroundings. Not everything will be lit and distinction disappears. We have developed the experience of space on a bridge, from the possibility to apply artificial lighting. Is it possible to experience the space on a bridge in your car at night? The design doesn't light the bridge with street lamps and lights. The bridge transforms and is lit 'from within'. Space is created with the help from technology. The construction and the lighting depend on each other and form an open structure. The configuration of light sources, ranging from small to large, indicate the track the car is following. ‘Artificial lighting' will give the driver the sense that the bridge isn't just a connecting piece, but also a space in the darkness. By moving forward, the driver finds himself in a track of light; he is surrounded by a configuration of artificial lighting. The bridge is concrete and dispersed with glass ‘dots'. These units, especially designed by a glass- and light supplier, have glass at the top and the bottom, so day light can enter the space under the bridge. The glass units contain energetic LED lighting. The LED lighting is indicative lighting, which means it is sufficient in comparison with general lighting principles.

bridge of wind en water
principalr: OBR Rotterdam completion: 2004
How can technique and architecture generate the specific within the global? The design of the bridge deals with this question.
Through a wind- and watermachine a specific place is generated within the global automobility and the global elements of wind and water. The movement and these elements are transformed and reappear in their difference
The area of Nessellande, Rottedam Netherlands features typical Dutch qualities of a wide and open landscape combined with the elements of wind and water. The bridge is meant as a place where these features meet. For example when walking over the bridge one becomes aware of the horizon. A church in the distance, a feel of the wind blowing and the sound of water dashing on a shore. One becomes aware of the elements of nature. The bridge combines elements far off and close by. A question during the development process was how these different experiences (factors/elements) could provide space. For the bridge is chosen to bring the experience of wind and water closer to the traveller. By designing two routes, pedestrians are separated from cyclists and cars. The driver of the car while sitting inside, is almost unaware of the elements of wind and water, this opposed to the pedestrian who cannot avoid these elements. The pedestrian route leads to a wind and water installation. It is an installation made of two parts and connected by perforated steel that can be crossed by the pedestrian.
The water installation reacts to the movement of the water below the bridge, a part is floating on the water; the wind machine is motioned by the wind. Below the pedestrians’ feet the water is moving visibly. In this way wind and water provides an experience of simulated weightlessness to the pedestrian. The bridge is mainly made of steel. The columns situated above and below the water are in concrete The road surface designed for cars is made of moulded asphalt. The upper deck of the walking route is made of wood panels combined with perforated steel.

brug floating horizon
Opdrachtgever: OBR Rotterdam Realisatie: 2009

Sustainable bridge for the important highway between Amsterdam and Almere. Functional and icon. The bridge uses energy of wind and sun. The bridge is cleaning the rainwater from the surface of the upperdeck.
